SMALL, FAMILY WINERIES AND THEIR OPTIONS TO FIND IMPORTERS

One of the main difficulties for small and family wineries is how to place and introduce their wines on new markets through importers and distributors in Europe, North America and Asia. One of the many reasons for this situation is the difficulty to show the consumers, importers and distributors the attributes and strengths of these unknown to most people but good quality new wines so that the demand can be generated.
The ways to place a new wine on the international market are many and they are based on being ranked or evaluated by a journalist specialized in wines from certain country -this evaluation goes generally from 1 to 100- or paying for advertising in wine magazines, such as Decanter, Wine Spectator, Food & Wine and Harper among others.

Subsequently, after obtaining a score that goes with the commercial objectives of the winery, an interest in that particular wine is generated in the distributor or importer, the contact is created and then if there is an agreement, the distribution is carried out.

The problem with this strategy is that only a few wineries –less than a 10%- are able to bear the high costs of advertising in a specialized magazine, which produces a “hustle and bustle” to find new ways to communicate and deliver the precious message to the consumers, distributors and foreign consumers.

That`s why after considering the weaknesses in communication and creating a platform to contact the wineries and the rest of the world, a system was launch to integrate wine producers, distributors and importers through the “wine market place” in http://www.andeswines.com. They have developed a searching system for wine importers and distributors directly, with no middlemen, in Spanish, English and German, which opens great opportunities in different markets, such as the North American, European and Asian.

Now at days, we are in contact with 150 importers and several distributors in twelve countries that are interested in getting to know new wineries that can offer wine with a unique personality and identity with a price that goes over US$ 40 or US$ 50 dollars a 12 bottles pack. According to Maximiliano Morales, agronomist and manager of AndesWines.com, the main point is that their company introduces the wineries to the people in charge of buying through a direct contact, which is highly appreciated by both sides because of the difficulty implied in contacting winery owners with distributors in Texas, Atlanta, Hong Kong or Singapur.

With this new tool to search importers and distributors a new way to create opportunities for businesses is opened, in specific market niches for organic wines and small production wines with exceptional quality.
